I think I am exhausted by social media. I can’t keep up with all of my social media accounts. I mean how do you keep coming up with something witty, intelligent, heartwarming and enticing to keep people coming back or liking /commenting? I just can’t do it, I really can’t. Don’t get me wrong, I love social media, but I cannot maintain a worthwhile update schedule.

So far, here are the following social media applications I am on personally just so you know what I mean about not being able to keep up:

  • Google +
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • Path
  • Diaspora
  • Linkedin
  • Pinterest
  • Foursquare
  • Flickr

But then I also have some accounts on the above services for this blog:

  • @machinesdeep on Twitter
  • machines deep on Google +
  • @machinesdeep on instagram

I am constantly amazed to how much social media is used today. I mean from news reporters putting their Twitter name up during a report, through to sports people with Twitter handles on the back of their uniforms. I can’t believe how it has infiltrated day to day life. Now when you deal with a company via Facebook, Twitter or Google + (for example) you are talking to potentially three different employees who have been hired to look after responding to customers via one of those areas. For these companies that do this they definitely run the risk of having three different messages going out, which would obviously cause the company some grief. Only a few years ago I would not have believed that you could have a full time job doing this. There is no way I could spend every day at work responding or creating content so people will look at my page! But I will definitely give it a go for this blog!!

I guess this leads me to the question I always ask myself ‘Am I using Social Media the right way?’ and I can never answer. I think it really depends on what you want to get out of it, do you want more friends on Facebook, do you want more connections on LinkedIn or is it more about the quality of these links? One of the obvious answers to many of the questions about Social Media is you get out of it what you put in to it. I think for both my personal and blog accounts I really would like quality (over quantity) connections where people comment and we are able to create a small community of like minded people.

So I guess after letting you know that I am not amazing with social media I would love it if you wanted to follow me on any of the accounts for my blog and I will definitely add you back… Yes, you got me, I’m an addict!
